Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, Hosts Network of Water Rights Initiative (NEWARI), Expresses His Administration’s Burning Desire to End Water Poverty in Enugu State

The Network of Water Rights Initiative (NEWARI), a coalition of 23 civil society organizations committed to addressing water poverty, held a productive meeting with the Executive Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency Barr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah. The gathering, which took place at the Government House in Enugu, focused on shared objectives and the vital role of civil society organizations in achieving water-related interventions in the state.

Amb. Mrs. Amaka Nweke JP, the Coordinator and Board Secretary of NEWARI, expressed her appreciation to Governor Mbah for his willingness to collaborate with civil society organizations and other stakeholders across various sectors. She emphasized the importance of their support in bringing about significant improvements in water access and related interventions in Enugu State.

NEWARI, as a task team member organization of the End Water Poverty Coalition based in the United Kingdom and a member of the Pan-African Network, Africa Water Justice Network, has been actively working to improve access to quality water, sanitation, and hygiene services in the South-East region. Their efforts align with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 6, which emphasizes universal access to water and sanitation.

During the meeting, Mr. Temple Oraeki, the board chairman of NEWARI, commended Governor Mbah's commitment to ensuring water availability within the first 180 days of his administration, as well as improving sanitation and hygiene in the state. Mr. Oraeki expressed optimism that with the governor's strong political will and demonstrated capacity, the task at hand could be achieved.

Governor Mbah acknowledged the significance of partnerships in strengthening systems and promoting development. He commended civil society organizations for their valuable contributions and assured them of his administration's continued support and engagement. The governor stressed that the people of Enugu State deserve access to clean water, and he expressed his determination to fulfill this basic need within the next 154 days.

Governor Mbah highlighted that Enugu State possesses abundant water sources and should not face water challenges in the 21st century. He emphasized the importance of a resilient water supply system that can provide water consistently throughout the year, eliminating the need for individual water storage towers. The governor mentioned ongoing efforts to improve water schemes in different areas of the state, including the 9th Mile Water Scheme and the Orji River Water Scheme.

Furthermore, the governor acknowledged the importance of sanitation and hygiene and recognized that providing water to schools, hospitals, and markets would contribute to ending open defecation in the state. He expressed gratitude to NEWARI for their commitment to overseeing the achievement of water-related goals.

The meeting between Governor Peter Mbah and the Network of Water Rights Initiative (NEWARI) signifies a strong commitment to addressing water poverty in Enugu State. With the governor's dedication to collaboration with civil society organizations, there is hope for significant progress in improving water access and sanitation, ultimately transforming the lives of the people in the state.
