Kidnappers and Robbers Tighten Grip on 2nd Niger Bridge, Raising Security Concerns

In recent developments, the 2nd Niger Bridge has become increasingly dangerous due to the escalating activities of kidnappers, armed robbers, and hoodlums, according to the National President of Heavy Duty Drivers Association, Uchenna Nebuwa. This alarming situation has led drivers, including members of the association, to avoid the bridge altogether, citing serious security concerns.

Speaking to Newsmen in Onitsha, Mr Nebuwa expressed grave concerns about the security situation, highlighting that the criminal elements have not only taken over the bridge but also expanded their operations along the Obosi-Owerri axis of the road. This has created an atmosphere of fear and insecurity among drivers, prompting them to seek alternative routes.

Another significant issue exacerbating the problem is the failed portions of the Obosi-Owerri road. The constant occurrence of truck accidents on the road has resulted in significant losses amounting to over N20 billion worth of vehicles and goods. Mr Nebuwa called on the Federal Government to intervene and repair the failed sections of the road, which, in turn, would encourage drivers to utilize the 2nd Niger Bridge once again.

Echoing the same concerns, Mr Chukwuemeka Olekpe, Chairman of the Great Tippers Association of Nigeria, Anambra Chapter, voiced his worries about the increasing security threats posed by armed robbers and kidnappers. He emphasized that drivers are now reluctant to use the bridge due to the perceived risks to their safety and urged authorities to address the situation promptly.

Paul Osakwe, a commercial bus driver plying the Asaba-Owerri road, shared his firsthand experience, stating that the bridge has become a desolate and insecure path. The absence of proper lighting on the bridge further adds to the apprehension among drivers and passengers alike. Mr Osakwe called on the government to install adequate lighting to improve safety conditions.

Seyi Martins, the Engineer in charge of the 2nd Niger Bridge, attributed the low usage to the prevailing security challenges in the South-East region. He clarified that their primary mandate was to construct the bridge and ensure it eases traffic flow. However, the escalating security situation has hampered its intended purpose.

In response to the concerns raised by various stakeholders, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, Mahmuda Mamman, called on security agencies to intensify security measures not only on the 2nd Niger Bridge but also in the surrounding areas. He stressed the need for concerted efforts to tackle the security issues and ensure the safety of lives and property for all those who rely on the bridge for their daily activities
