Agricultural Revolution: Enugu State Gov't Inaugurates 15 Aggregation and Cottage Processing Centers, Unveiling a New Era of Mechanised Farming

In a strategic shift towards agricultural revolution, the Enugu State Governor, Barr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah officially commissioned fifteen Aggregation and Cottage Processing Centres across Enugu State's three senatorial zones. The initiative, supported by the World Bank through the Agro-Processing, Productivity Enhancement and Livelihood Improvement Support (APPEALS) project, aims to redefine food production, implement modern processing methods, and safeguard post-harvest produce.

The inauguration ceremony, held at Nara in the Nkanu East Local Government Area, served as a landmark moment for the state's agricultural sector. Governor Mbah, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, lauded the project as a testament to the administration's commitment to elevating food production. He outlined a vision to transform Enugu State into a net exporter of agricultural products within the next four years.

Since its inception in 2019, APPEALS has empowered 8,520 direct beneficiaries, including women, youths, and people with disabilities. Governor Mbah highlighted the positive impacts on farmers in various value chains, emphasizing the project's focus on capacity building, technology demonstrations, and knowledge exchange.

The Enugu State APPEALS Project Coordinator, Mrs. Ihuoma Eze, underscored the significant contributions made by the project, particularly in prioritizing the needs of women and youths in agriculture and entrepreneurship. The newly inaugurated Aggregation and Processing Centres boast state-of-the-art machinery for optimal operation, with rice processing capabilities of 10 tons per day and 5 tons per day for milling and drying, respectively.

Hon. Patrick Nwabueze Ubru, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, highlighted Governor Mbah's commitment to boosting food production, modernizing processing methods, and mitigating post-harvest losses. He encouraged continued collaboration and support to sustain the agricultural revolution, emphasizing the potential for substantial revenue generation.

Local government officials, including Hon. Okechukwu Edeh, Chairman of Nkanu East Local Government, and Traditional Ruler Igwe Ifeanyi Ogbu, commended the project's timeliness and responsiveness to the needs of the people. They expressed optimism that the newly inaugurated rice mills, cashew centers, and poultry clusters would inspire farmers to embrace industrialized farming, ultimately enhancing economic growth in the state.

The commissioning ceremony, attended by key stakeholders, marked a momentous occasion in Enugu State's journey towards agricultural prosperity and self-sufficiency. The Aggregation and Processing Centres now stand as tangible symbols of a transformative step "from dream to reality" in the state's agricultural landscape.
