In a statement released by Deacon Okey Ogbodo, Commissioner for Local Government, Rural Development and Chieftaincy Affairs, on Thursday, the state government disclosed its intention to conduct a full-scale investigation into the activities of the masquerade groups, promising swift action against those responsible.
“The Enugu State Government has been informed about the disruptive activities of Oriokpa masqueraders in parts of Nsukka LGA, which have reportedly led to public unrest, physical injuries, and loss of life," the statement read.
“In line with the directives of Governor Peter Mbah, the traditional rulers and Presidents-General of the affected communities are hereby invited to a meeting with the Hon. Commissioner for Local Government, Rural Development and Chieftaincy Affairs. The meeting is scheduled to take place on Friday, September 27, 2024, at 1 p.m., at the State Secretariat.”

In addition to the meeting, the governor has instructed the Commissioner of Police to launch a comprehensive investigation into the incidents, particularly the reported deaths, with a view to ensuring that those responsible face justice.
Expressing sympathy for the families of the victims, the government emphasized its commitment to protecting the security and rights of all residents of Enugu State, warning that further misconduct by the masquerade groups or any other individuals would be met with serious consequences.
“The Enugu State Government takes a strong stance against any form of violence or lawlessness. Our people must not live in fear. The safety and rights of our women, children, youth, and all citizens and residents of the state must be upheld. Any future violations by the Oriokpa masqueraders or any other group will be dealt with accordingly,” the statement concluded.
