BREAKING: Gunmen Kill 70 in Haiti

At least 70 people have tragically lost their lives in a massacre in the Haitian town of Pont-Sonde, as heavily armed members of the notorious Gran Grif gang stormed the area, opening fire on residents in the early hours of Thursday. The United Nations (UN) has confirmed the staggering death toll, as well as the destruction left in the wake of this brutal attack.

Armed with automatic rifles, the gunmen unleashed terror on the town located in Haiti's Artibonite region. The UN's Human Rights Office expressed horror at the scale of the violence, which left at least 16 others seriously injured. As the chaos unfolded, gang members set fire to 45 homes and 34 vehicles, forcing countless residents to flee for their lives.

Scenes of devastation greeted the UN's response teams, with bodies strewn across the streets, many of the victims reportedly shot in the head. The violence claimed the lives of vulnerable groups, including a young mother, her newborn child, and a midwife. A total of 10 women and three children are confirmed to be among the dead, according to a representative from the Commission for Dialogue, Reconciliation and Awareness to Save the Artibonite.

Shocking footage from the massacre showed terrified residents scrambling to escape the attack, which has been described as one of the largest massacres in recent years in Haiti’s central region. The motive behind the assault remains unclear, although gang violence has plagued the country, particularly in areas like Port-au-Prince, where gangs control around 80% of the capital.

Following the massacre, the Haitian government deployed an elite police unit to Pont-Sonde and sent medical supplies to the region's overwhelmed hospital, which is struggling to treat dozens of injured residents. In a statement issued on Friday, Prime Minister Garry Conille condemned the attack as a heinous crime, emphasizing that it was not just an assault on the victims but on the entire Haitian nation.

Haiti continues to grapple with widespread gang violence, with much of the unrest linked to ongoing turf wars. However, the Pont-Sonde area is known to be part of the Gran Grif gang’s own territory, raising questions about the group’s motivations for the attack. Despite increased international attention, including a previous investigation into gang leader Barbecue by Sky News, the violence remains rampant, with no immediate end in sight.

While Haiti mourns the lives lost in this devastating massacre, the international community watches closely, hoping for steps towards peace and stability in the troubled nation.
