BREAKING NEWS! Former Eagles Goalkeeper Dies

Former Green Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Fregene, has passed away after battling a protracted illness. The sad news was shared by his close friend and ex-international, Segun Odegbami, on Sunday.

Peter Fregene, who was a notable figure in Nigerian football during the 1960s and 70s, died in the presence of his wife, Tina, and two of his children. Odegbami, while announcing the death, expressed his condolences and paid tribute to Fregene's life and career.

Fregene had been in critical condition for over a week, on life support in a hospital in Sapele, Delta State. His condition had drawn attention when Odegbami previously solicited financial assistance for him. Fregene’s need for urgent medical attention was highlighted, and although some financial aid came in, his condition continued to deteriorate.

In a heartfelt message, Odegbami said, “A few minutes ago, Peter ‘Apo’ Fregene, OLY, former goalkeeper for Nigeria’s Green Eagles, who has been on life support for the past one week, passed on to meet his creator. He died quietly in the presence of two of his children and his devoted wife, Tina.”

He also thanked those who rallied to support the football legend during his illness, recognizing the contributions of Fregene's family, friends, and supporters who worked tirelessly to help him.

Peter Fregene’s illustrious football career saw him represent Nigeria at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico. His agility and quick reflexes earned him the nickname ‘Apo’ or ‘Flying Cat.’ Fregene was renowned for his dedication on the field, contributing immensely to the national team during his active years.

His passing has reignited discussions about the need for a comprehensive welfare system for retired athletes in Nigeria, as many, like Fregene, face significant challenges after their careers have ended. Odegbami, who had earlier called attention to this issue, lamented the inadequate support structures for sports veterans in the country.

Peter Fregene will be remembered not only as a remarkable goalkeeper but also as a symbol of dedication and resilience in Nigerian football. He leaves behind his wife and children, as well as a lasting legacy in the history of Nigerian sports.
