INEC to Conduct By-Election in Rivers

The Rivers State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Victor Oko-Jumbo, reiterated its position on Tuesday that the legislative seats of Martin Amaewhule and 24 other lawmakers remain vacant following their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on December 11, 2023. The Assembly urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to swiftly conduct bye-elections to fill these seats.

Victor Oko-Jumbo, the Speaker of the pro-Fubara faction, issued a statement clarifying that the seats were declared vacant on December 13, 2023, by the then Speaker, Edison Ehie. He expressed concerns over the delay by INEC in conducting the necessary bye-elections, emphasizing that the delay had created unnecessary distractions, particularly from Amaewhule and his associates, who Oko-Jumbo referred to as a "committee of friends."

Oko-Jumbo highlighted that the defection of Amaewhule and the others was well-publicized at the time. He pointed out that on December 13, 2023, an affidavit was filed by Amaewhule in a lawsuit (Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/1681/2023), where he justified the defection due to internal issues within the PDP. According to Oko-Jumbo, the legislative seats were lawfully declared vacant, and no legal challenge has overturned this decision.

Since then, Oko-Jumbo has taken over as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, overseeing the legislative process, which has included passing resolutions, screening commissioner nominees, and recommending them for appointment by the Governor of Rivers State.

Oko-Jumbo dismissed the recent actions of Amaewhule and his group, who on October 15, 2024, attempted to declare the seats of Oko-Jumbo and others vacant. He criticized this move as a futile and misguided attempt to undermine the authority of the legitimate members of the Assembly, reaffirming that Amaewhule and his associates no longer have any legislative powers.

As a result, Oko-Jumbo called on INEC to fulfill its constitutional duty by conducting bye-elections to fill the vacant seats. He urged the people of Rivers State to ignore the actions of Amaewhule and his associates, describing them as mere distractions from individuals who no longer hold legitimate legislative authority.
