Police Clears Air on Viral Video, Urges Public to Remain Calm

The Imo State Police Command has issued an official statement to clarify the misinformation circulating in a viral video that has sparked concern among residents. The video, which shows vehicles set ablaze by individuals allegedly affiliated with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) while enforcing an unlawful sit-at-home order, is being recirculated across social media platforms. According to the police, this incident, though alarming, is not recent and has been falsely portrayed as a current event.

In a press release signed by the Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, and communicated through the state's Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Okoye Henry, the Command revealed that the events shown in the video actually occurred in 2022, not on October 21, 2024, as suggested by the mischief-makers behind its resurgence.

“The Imo State Police Command is issuing this statement in response to a recent viral video showing vehicles set ablaze by individuals affiliated with IPOB/ESN enforcing an unlawful sit-at-home order in Okigwe. The Command confirms that this video is misleading; the incident depicted actually occurred in 2022. Its recirculation is a calculated attempt by mischief makers to instill unnecessary fear and anxiety in the state,” the statement reads.

The police further warned against the deliberate dissemination of fake news and misinformation, emphasizing that such activities are not only disruptive but also punishable by law. The Command has vowed to investigate and prosecute anyone found responsible for the spread of false information that threatens public peace.

CP Danjuma reassured residents of Imo State, particularly those in Okigwe, that there is no reason to panic. He encouraged everyone to go about their lawful activities without fear, as the police and other security agencies are fully committed to maintaining peace and public safety in the state.

“The Command, in collaboration with other security agencies, is committed to combating misinformation and ensuring a safe environment for all and sundry in the state,” the Commissioner of Police assured.

Residents are urged to rely on verified information from the authorities and to avoid being swayed by viral content that may be circulated to disrupt the peace and sow discord in the community.

This clarification comes at a time when the rise of misleading content on social media has become a growing concern, and the Imo State Police Command has reiterated its dedication to safeguarding the truth and protecting public safety.
