Enugu Workers Join Nationwide Protest, NLC Demands N200,000 Minimum Wage

In a show of solidarity with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), workers from Enugu State have joined the ongoing nationwide strike this morning, August 2, 2023. The NLC has presented its demands during the protest, with the Lagos State chapter voicing a call for a N200,000 national minimum wage after the removal of fuel subsidy.

The protest, which commenced under Ikeja under-bridge in Lagos, has been fueled by the pressing issue of rising living costs and the detrimental impact on the welfare of citizens. Speaking on behalf of the NLC during the protest, a leader emphasized that the cost of living has become exorbitant, leading to hardships and even deaths due to hunger.

In response to the government's actions, the NLC had given a seven-day ultimatum, warning of a nationwide strike. The central issues raised during the protest include the demand for the national minimum wage to be set at N200,000, the need for all four refineries to be operational, and the inclusion of labor representatives on the supervisory committee.

In their pursuit of constructive dialogue, the NLC plans to travel to Abuja to engage with the government and present their charter of demands. The situation remains tense as the NLC's demands are at the forefront of the nation's attention, urging for meaningful action and resolution to the pressing concerns of the working population.
