The newly elected President of the Nsukka Youths General Assembly (NYGA), Comrade Clinton Ogbonna, has pledged to focus on empowering youths in the areas of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital skills. In his acceptance speech, delivered shortly after being declared the president-elect in a peaceful election, Ogbonna emphasized the importance of equipping youths with technological skills to promote self-reliance and combat social issues like crime and drug abuse.
Speaking to an enthusiastic crowd at the Nsukka Local Government Council Headquarters, Ogbonna highlighted the transformative impact of AI and digital skills on modern industries and employment. He announced that his administration’s priority would be to provide Nsukka youths with these essential tools to ensure they can compete globally and contribute positively to society.
"AI and digital technologies are shaping the world around us," Ogbonna stated. "Our goal is to train the youths in these fields, so they not only stay away from negative influences but also develop skills that make them self-reliant and productive members of society."
The newly elected president affirmed his commitment to working with key stakeholders such as the government, National Assembly representatives, the private sector, and policymakers to support youth empowerment programs. He particularly noted the importance of engaging young people in areas like cybersecurity, digital data analysis, and software development.
Ogbonna stressed that the key to reducing youth involvement in crime and drug abuse lies in empowerment. He advocated for skill-based empowerment programs as the most effective means of creating self-sufficient and productive youths who can channel their energies into meaningful endeavors.
"The quickest route to a crime-free and drug-free society is to empower youths with skills that provide them with independence," he explained. "Through these skills, our youths will be able to compete on a global level, rather than resort to crime out of desperation."
Ogbonna also pledged inclusivity, promising to carry everyone along, including those who contested against him in the election, in the interest of unity and progress for the assembly. He extended gratitude to the NYGA members for entrusting him with their mandate, and commended the Electoral Committee, led by Mr. Onyekachi Attama, for overseeing a peaceful and transparent election process.
The outgoing NYGA President, Comrade Roy Ekwueme, expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conclusion of the election, acknowledging the unity and progress that characterized his four-year tenure. Ekwueme noted that his administration would be remembered for fostering peace, unity, and empowerment among Nsukka youths, particularly during the End SARS protests, which saw active participation from Nsukka youths without any violence or destruction of property.
Ekwueme also listed several notable achievements during his time in office, including organizing computer training programs, paying JAMB registration fees for indigent youths, and assisting with hospital bills for struggling youths. He concluded by urging Nsukka youths to offer the same support and solidarity to the new administration.
Clinton Ogbonna secured his presidency with a decisive victory, receiving 284 votes to defeat his opponent, Eze Martins, who garnered 106 votes. The election was held at the Adada Hall in Nsukka and saw the participation of 11 other newly elected executive members.
As the apex body for youth organizations in Enugu North Senatorial District, the Nsukka Youths General Assembly (NYGA) plays a crucial role in shaping the future of the region's youth. With Ogbonna at the helm, the focus now shifts to the future of AI-driven youth empowerment initiatives.
