The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Monday Okpebholo, has emerged victorious in the highly competitive Edo State governorship election held on Saturday. Okpebholo garnered a total of 291,667 votes across the 18 local government areas (LGAs), as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday. His closest rival, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), secured 247,655 votes, while Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) finished third with 22,763 votes.
However, Okpebholo’s win has not come without controversy. During a campaign rally at Ovia-north LGA, the APC candidate made a notable blunder when he mistakenly pledged to "provide insecurity" to Edo State if elected. The incident, which went viral on social media, occurred while Adams Oshiomhole, senator representing Edo north, was raising concerns about the security situation in the state.
In a video widely circulated on Facebook, Okpebholo, while reacting to Oshiomhole's comments, mistakenly said, "We’re going to provide you with insecurity," before quickly correcting himself after a gesture from Oshiomhole. The blunder sparked outrage from the public and political groups, including The Edo Salvation Group (ESG), which gave Okpebholo 24 hours to explain the gaffe.
Imman Ekpe, national coordinator of ESG, expressed concern over the APC candidate’s mistake, questioning his readiness for leadership. In a statement, Ekpe called on Okpebholo to address the issue publicly or risk being disowned as a viable candidate by the group. He also highlighted other errors Okpebholo made during his campaign, such as claiming that providing transformers would completely solve the state's electricity issues.
Despite the misstep, Okpebholo's victory has been celebrated by APC supporters across the state. In response to the electoral results, Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, the PDP Chairman in Edo, called for a review of the results, citing discrepancies between the announced figures and those uploaded to INEC’s Results Viewing Portal (IREV).
The Edo governorship race, marked by intense competition, is now under scrutiny, with political analysts awaiting the outcome of PDP's appeal and any further clarifications from Okpebholo regarding his campaign gaffes. Nevertheless, the APC's victory in Edo remains a significant achievement for the party in the South-South region.
