BREAKING: Police Arrest Political Thugs Ahead Elections

The Nigeria Police Force has apprehended two political thugs in Edo State as part of heightened security measures ahead of the upcoming elections. The arrests, made during an overnight raid across multiple locations in the state, were confirmed in a press statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Saturday, September 21.

According to ACP Adejobi, the suspects, identified as 43-year-old Edwin Obanor and 41-year-old Audu Tajudeen, were arrested with dangerous weapons in their possession. The operation, part of the police's intensified efforts to curb electoral violence, led to the recovery of three cut-to-size locally fabricated pistols from Obanor and one locally made gun from Tajudeen.

In his statement, Adejobi detailed the police's swift action based on intelligence gathered regarding potential threats of violence. He said, “Acting on a tip-off that some individuals had been armed to cause mayhem and instability during the election on Saturday, the police operatives swooped into action and apprehended Obanor, a leader of an armed group, at Oredo Ward 4 at about 9 pm and Audu Tajudeen at Igara Akoko, Edo, on the eve of the election."

The arrest of these individuals, who reportedly had plans to disrupt the election process, comes as a critical move in ensuring a peaceful and orderly election in Edo State. The police have been proactive in their response, intensifying surveillance and raids to prevent violence in politically sensitive areas. Obanor was caught with the three fabricated pistols, while Tajudeen, identified as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Ugbogbo quarters, Igara Akoko, Edo, was found with a locally made gun.

“These arrests are a testament to the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring a peaceful electoral process,” ACP Adejobi emphasized, adding that the force will continue to work diligently to safeguard the integrity of the election.

He reiterated the firm stance of law enforcement agencies in tackling any potential disruptions, warning that "the police and other supporting security agencies will not tolerate any form of violence or disorderliness during the election in Edo State."

The operation underscores the broader efforts by security agencies to foster a peaceful environment as the political atmosphere heats up ahead of the election. These arrests are expected to send a strong message to those planning to engage in unlawful activities, reinforcing the authorities' zero-tolerance approach to violence and electoral misconduct.

As Edo State prepares for what could be a highly contested election, the actions of the Nigeria Police Force are being closely watched, with citizens hopeful that peace and stability will prevail during the electoral process.
