BREAKING! Popular Nigerian Senator Arrested with Drugs

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced the recovery of illicit drugs from the personal residence of Kwara South Senator, Oyeyola Ashiru, following a series of raids. The agency linked the lawmaker’s recent accusations against the NDLEA to a personal vendetta. During a Senate session on October 15, Senator Ashiru had criticized the NDLEA, labeling it corrupt and compromised, while advocating for the establishment of a new anti-drug agency.

In response, NDLEA Chairman, Brigadier General Buba Marwa (Rtd), through his spokesperson Femi Babafemi, countered the Senator’s claims during a media briefing on Monday. Marwa suggested that Ashiru’s outburst was fueled by personal grievances rather than public interest. He further revealed that the Senator’s residence in Ilorin, Kwara State, was raided earlier in the year, leading to the arrest of two of his aides— Ibrahim Mohammed and Mohammed Yahaya—after drugs were found on the premises.

The NDLEA chief detailed the events leading to the Senator's alleged grudge, noting that the agency had acted on credible intelligence linking Ashiru’s house to drug activities. The raid, conducted on February 4, 2024, unearthed illicit substances and led to the apprehension of two aides, with a third suspect escaping.

Additionally, Marwa recounted another incident where the Senator’s associates, known locally as "Omo Senator," were implicated in drug-related activities in Offa, Kwara State. Following a raid, one suspect, Oluwatosin Odepidan, was arrested, and methamphetamine and cannabis were recovered. Despite attempts by Ashiru's personal assistant to influence the case, the NDLEA ensured the prosecution and conviction of Odepidan.

According to Marwa, Senator Ashiru's accusations appear to stem from these encounters with the NDLEA. He maintained that the agency has acted professionally and remains committed to its mandate, regardless of the Senator’s remarks.

While Senator Ashiru's criticism sparked debate within the Senate, Marwa emphasized that the NDLEA continues to receive recognition and support from international partners such as the United Kingdom and the United States, which have donated facilities to aid its operations. The NDLEA, Marwa noted, has made over 52,000 arrests and secured 9,000 convictions, including life sentences, in the past three years.

Marwa concluded by asserting that the agency will not be deterred by the Senator’s comments and remains focused on dismantling illicit drug networks, including those associated with individuals in positions of power.
