Disturbing Videos of Anambra Sunday Mass Killing Surface, as Parents and Relatives of the Deceased Wail in Agony
Disturbing videos have emerged showing the aftermath of a mass killing that left dead bodies scattered across the streets and markets in Nibo, a quiet community in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State. The gruesome attack occurred on Sunday, October 20, 2024, when gunmen stormed the Oye Nwochichi market, indiscriminately opening fire on unsuspecting victims.
The horrifying footage, which has circulated widely on social media, shows blood-soaked bodies lying motionless on the ground, as wailing parents and relatives struggle to come to terms with the brutal loss of their loved ones. The emotional scenes depict people desperately calling out names, hoping against hope that someone might still be alive amidst the carnage.
Witnesses revealed that the assailants arrived in a brown Lexus 300 Jeep and began the killing spree at Oye Nwochichi market near Nibo old maternity. After carrying out the attack there, they sped off to Eke Nibo Market, where more victims were gunned down. While the official number of casualties has yet to be confirmed, local sources report that at least 10 bodies have been recovered so far, with many more feared dead or critically injured.
"The scene was horrific. Bodies were scattered everywhere. People were crying, shouting, and running for their lives. It's a nightmare we will never forget," said a resident who narrowly escaped the attack.
In response to the massacre, the Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the attack, attributing the violence to a clash between rival cult groups. SP Ikenga Tochukwu, the Command’s spokesperson, stated that the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has ordered the immediate deployment of additional police personnel to the area in an effort to restore calm and prevent further violence.
The police have also urged witnesses and members of the public to come forward with any information that could lead to the identification and apprehension of the perpetrators. "We are treating this with the utmost urgency and confidentiality. Anyone with useful information should reach out to us immediately," Tochukwu said in a statement, emphasizing the need for cooperation in the ongoing investigation.
As the dust settles, the once-bustling markets are now scenes of desolation, marked by bloodstains and broken lives. Grieving families are left grappling with the senseless violence that has torn their community apart. Calls for justice and heightened security measures are growing louder, as the residents of Nibo and surrounding areas live in fear of further attacks.
The situation remains tense, with security forces working around the clock to restore order. However, the memory of this devastating Sunday will undoubtedly leave deep scars on the community for years to come. Further updates on the investigation and any arrests will be provided by the authorities as more details emerge.
