Enugu: Truck Crushes Three to Death

A tragic accident occurred in Enugu State at Nsukka Local Government Area on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, when a tipper truck loaded with sharp sand crushed three individuals to death along the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) road.

Eyewitnesses reported that the truck was descending the slope from the Total Roundabout towards the UNN road when the driver allegedly experienced brake failure, leading to the devastating accident. Gabriel, an eyewitness, shared that the first victim was a plastic vendor who was instantly killed by the truck.

In a separate account, Gabriel also mentioned that a motorcycle rider, commonly referred to as an "okada man," carrying two passengers, spotted the oncoming truck and jumped off his bike to safety. Unfortunately, the two passengers he was carrying were not so lucky, as they were crushed by the truck, and the motorcycle was smashed beneath it.

The accident did not stop there, as it was reported that about five vehicles queuing for fuel at a nearby NNPC petrol station were also damaged.

A driver of a UNN shuttle bus, who narrowly escaped the tragedy, recounted his experience. He mentioned that he had stepped out of his vehicle to relieve himself moments before the accident, crediting his survival to divine intervention.

Several other people reportedly sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. Meanwhile, the driver of the tipper truck escaped unharmed, and his whereabouts remain unknown as of the time of this report.

This incident has left the Nsukka community in shock, as the victims' families and other residents mourn the loss of lives in the avoidable tragedy. Authorities are yet to release an official statement regarding the accident, while efforts to locate the driver continue.
