NEWS FLASH: Former Governors Threaten to Leave PDP Amid Party Crisis

The crisis within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) continues to deepen as prominent leaders express frustration and consider their options outside the party. The latest leader to signal potential defection is the former Governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam.

Suswam, speaking in Makurdi, the Benue State capital on Monday, cautioned PDP against treating him and his loyal supporters as though they were stranded without alternatives. He expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of the party and hinted that his group would make collective decisions on their next steps if necessary.

“We are not stranded here,” Suswam declared, emphasizing the unity among his supporters. He further stated, “Collectively, we will decide on the way forward. If we think there’s an alternative, we will explore those alternatives. But it will be a collective decision, not mine alone.”

The former Senator, who represents Benue North, criticized the leadership of PDP's National Chairman, Illiya Damagum, accusing him of providing the worst national leadership the party has ever seen. Suswam leads one of the PDP factions in Benue and has grown increasingly vocal about his dissatisfaction with the party’s direction.

Suswam's warning to the PDP leadership comes at a time when the party faces significant internal strife, raising concerns about its future cohesion. He made it clear that if the party continues to marginalize its members, they would have no choice but to seek alternatives collectively. While the situation within the PDP continues to unfold, Suswam’s statements suggest that more defections may follow if the party fails to address the grievances of key figures within its ranks. This development further complicates the ongoing challenges within the PDP as it strives to maintain its relevance in Nigeria’s political landscape.
