Gas Explosion Hits Ebonyi School, 10 Female Students Burnt

A tragic gas explosion occurred at the Good Shepherd Catering School in Orokeonuoha Community, Ebonyi Local Government Area, on Thursday, with 10 students were fatally burnt. The initial reports indicated that the explosion left several students severely injured.

The explosion, allegedly caused by a cooking gas cylinder in the school’s kitchen, happened while the students, aged 12 to 19, were in class. Despite immediate medical attention at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki, the severity of the burns sustained by the victims has raised concerns about their survival.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, described the situation as "heartbreaking," but noted that investigations are ongoing to confirm the actual cause. “It’s an unfortunate incident, and we are doing everything we can to assist the families,” he said.

The Ebonyi Fire Service was not alerted to the explosion and did not respond to the scene. State Chief Fire Officer Ralph Ibiam expressed deep regret over the incident, urging the public to be cautious when handling gas cylinders and electrical equipment. He noted that gas explosions have become more frequent in the state and warned against risky behaviors such as using phones near fuel stations or in kitchens.

In the aftermath, the Ebonyi State Government is being urged to provide urgent support to the affected families and reassess safety protocols in schools. This incident has prompted widespread concern about the maintenance of gas and electrical equipment in public institutions. The police and other relevant authorities are working together to determine the exact cause of the explosion and implement preventive measures to avoid future tragedies.
