JUST IN: Federal High Court Chief Judge Rejects Nnamdi Kanu's Request for Judge's Recusal

The Chief Judge of Nigeria’s Federal High Court, Justice John Terhemba Tsoho, has denied the request from Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), seeking the recusal of Justice Binta Nyako from his ongoing case.

Justice Tsoho ruled that Kanu’s call for Justice Nyako’s recusal was unfounded, reaffirming her as the presiding judge. He noted that the case, which began in 2015, had already seen two judges recuse themselves. Therefore, Justice Nyako’s continued involvement was deemed most appropriate due to her long-standing engagement with the case.

The Chief Judge further clarified that if Kanu wished to pursue the recusal request, he would need to submit a formal written motion supported by an affidavit, as his previous request had been made orally by his legal team.

Kanu’s Special Lawyer, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, confirmed the ruling, stating, “Yes, it is true. We are awaiting a hearing notice from the Federal High Court.”

Justice Nyako had earlier recused herself after Kanu accused her of not complying with a Supreme Court order, citing a loss of confidence in her ability to impartially handle the case. The situation remains fluid as further legal proceedings are awaited.
