OPEN LETTER TO ENUGU STATE GOVERNMENT
In an open letter dated October 4, 2024, Sir Simon Martins Okechukwu, representing the Enugu North Youth General Assembly, has called on the Enugu State Government to urgently address the escalating erosion crisis threatening the university town of Nsukka. The appeal, directed at Governor Peter Mbah and the Ministry of Works, highlights the life-threatening impact of regular rainfall and uncontrolled water flow, which recently trapped vehicles and residents. Okechukwu commended the efforts of former Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi in rehabilitating the Opi-Nsukka-Enugu road but warned of the urgent need for maintenance and intervention to prevent future disasters.
4th October, 2024.
OPEN LETTER TO ENUGU STATE GOVERNMENT.
AN APPEAL TO SAVE THE FOREMOST UNIVERSITY TOWN, NSUKKA FROM UNCOMFORTABLE EROSION MENACES
I write for myself once again and on behalf of the Enugu North Youth General Assembly, Igbo-Nsukka, to bring to the attention of Enugu State Government once again, particularly the Governor and Ministry of works and Infrastructures the life threatening erosion menaces happening in the road leading to the university town Nsukka especially now that rain falls regularly.
Your Excellency sir, it is no longer news that some time ago, on 28th of September, 2024, people and residents of Nsukka were nearly swallowed by uncontrollable water flow from ugwoye Nsukka through the proposed Nsukka bus terminal down to the university road to the UNN campus gate.
And again today, 4th October, 2024, many vehicles, Keke trycicles and even human beings were trapped in the on going heavy rain and erosion, thank God, no life was lost.
It is pursuant to the above and other compelling considerations, I supplicate for your august intervention to come to the aid of your subjects living in Nsukka urban including me and save us from the apperent danger of waste of property and life by stepping in and directing the Ministry of Works, Enugu State, to take immediate action to control the erosion now that we are about entering into raining season break to avert further, future unpalatable occurrence or reoccurrence as the case may be.
Permit me for once again to commend the effort of the former Governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon.Dr. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, CON, for his wisdom in rehabilitation of the Opi-Nsukka-Enugu road, Nsukka with underground drainage system as it were. From my findings through discret inquiries it's obvious the the drainage or water carnal are either blocked with unwanted refuse or they have started malfunctioning because of lack of maintenance culture. It is not in argument that the former Governor built the road with good intention to give the foremost University town, founded over half century ago to give a face lift to the university, UNN.
I must restate with enthusiasm that the on going Transport Terminal Park in Nsukka is also receiving a loud commendation at last.
May the Almighty God bless you sir.
SIR SIMON MARTINS OKECHUKWU, KSJI.
