Protests Erupt in Rivers as Wike Loyalists Seek to Halt LG Elections

Supporters of Chief Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), took to the streets of Rivers State on Saturday in protest against Governor Siminialayi Fubara’s decision to proceed with local government elections despite a Federal High Court ruling canceling the polls.

Led by chieftains and members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the protesters expressed concerns over the fairness of the elections and urged Governor Fubara to respect the court’s decision. According to Politics Nigeria, the demonstrators gathered in key locations, demanding justice and transparency in the electoral process.

Adding to the tension, the All Progressives Congress (APC) also mobilized its members at the party's secretariat in Port Harcourt, where plans were being made for a separate protest.

Meanwhile, the Rivers State Police Command has announced that they will not participate in the elections, following the court’s ruling. This decision has further complicated the political landscape in the state, as stakeholders await clarity on the next steps in resolving the electoral dispute.

Both protests highlight the growing political rift in Rivers State, with the potential for further legal and civil actions in the days ahead.
