HAPPENING NOW! Gunmen Kidnap Popular Catholic Priest
On Tuesday night, gunmen abducted Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Azubuike, the parish priest of St. Theresa’s Catholic Parish in Obollo, located in the Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State. Church officials reported that the abduction occurred near the Ayayi community in Obollo as Rev. Fr. Azubuike was returning to his parish after completing an assignment.
The Catholic Diocese of Okigwe has confirmed the incident, issuing a statement late Tuesday night. The statement, signed by the Chancellor/Secretary of the diocese, Very Rev. Fr. Princewill Iwuanyanwu, urged both the clergy and laity to offer prayers for the priest’s safety and prompt return. "I am directed to inform you that one of our priests, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Azubuike, was kidnapped this evening, Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at about 6 pm. Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Azubuike, who was ordained on September 27, 2014, is the parish priest of St. Theresa’s Catholic Parish, Obollo, Isiala Mbano LGA, Imo state. He was kidnapped along Aliyi community in Obollo, Isiala Mbano, Imo state while on his way back home from an assignment. We solicit your fervent prayers that he may come back to us safe and sound while trusting in your goodwill and solidarity," the statement read.
David Ajaero, the councillor of Obollo ward, confirmed the incident and stated that the community has already commenced prayers for Rev. Fr. Azubuike's release. Ajaero described the priest as a good man and called for his immediate and unconditional release while praying for his safety.
Local residents have also taken to social media to demand the release of the priest, sharing messages of support and pleading for his safe return.
In response, Imo State Police spokesperson Henry Okoye stated that the police command had initiated an investigation to rescue the abducted priest. “The CP has set up a high-powered investigation team to look into this matter for the possible rescue of the Catholic Priest and apprehension of the suspects,” Okoye affirmed, underscoring the police’s commitment to resolving the case promptly.
