CAN Calls for Stronger Synergy Between Faith Leaders and Government to Tackle National Challenges

Enugu State has made history as the host of the Christian Association of Nigeria’s (CAN) Fourth-Quarter National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, held on November 28, 2024, at the Jubilee Hall of the Holy Ghost Cathedral. This marked the first time in CAN's history that the NEC meeting was held in Enugu State. The event organized and sponsored by the Enugu State Government under the leadership of Governor Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, brought together Christian leaders from across Nigeria, including delegates from all 36 states and the FCT, to address key national issues.

The central theme of the meeting focused on fostering unity within the Christian Church and addressing pressing national challenges, such as insecurity, economic hardships, and citizen welfare. It provided a platform for Christian leaders to collaborate with government stakeholders to create solutions that will benefit the nation.

In his address, CAN President, Archbishop Dr. Daniel Okoh, commended the government and people of Enugu State for their hospitality and warmth. He also acknowledged the significance of hosting the meeting outside Abuja, underscoring Enugu’s role in promoting national unity. "This meeting is a critical opportunity to discuss issues of national concern and unity, regardless of political, ethnic, or religious affiliations," Archbishop Okoh said.

Archbishop Okoh further emphasized the importance of collaboration between the Christian faith leaders and government to address the country’s challenges. He reassured Nigerians that CAN is committed to supporting the government in its efforts to strengthen institutions and improve the well-being of citizens.

Delegates also praised Governor Peter Mbah for his exceptional leadership and his commitment to inclusive governance. "Governor Mbah’s efforts to transform Enugu State are commendable, and we encourage other governors to follow his example," said Rev. Amb Emmanuel Edeh, Chairman of CAN Enugu State. "The success of this meeting would not have been possible without the support of the Enugu State Government."

Several national Christian leaders, including Bishop Stephen Adegbuteh of CAN Lagos State and Rev. (Dr) Uzoako Williams, Assistant General Secretary of CAN, highlighted the importance of the meeting in shaping Nigeria’s future. Bishop Adegbuteh expressed optimism for 2025, describing it as a year of progress and restoration for Nigeria.

The meeting was attended by key figures from various Christian organizations, such as the Christian Council of Nigeria (CCN), Christian Social Movement of Nigeria (CSN), Organisation of African Independent Churches (OAIC), and the Taraba State Churches (TEKAN/ECWA). Zonal bloc leaders, including Most Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji of CCN and Rev. Joel S. Billi of the Taraba State Churches, also participated, ensuring broad representation from the Christian community.

Governor Mbah’s leadership was recognized as a model for other states to emulate. His efforts to support the Christian community and promote peace and development in Enugu State were lauded. “When governments like Enugu State succeed, the entire nation benefits,” Rev. Edeh noted.

CAN delegates departed Enugu with a renewed sense of purpose. The outcomes of the meeting are expected to pave the way for greater collaboration between the Christian community and government in addressing Nigeria's challenges. With continued leadership from figures like Governor Mbah, the future of the nation looks promising.
