BREAKING: Enugu-Based Prospective Corps Member Dies in Motor Accident on Her Way to Ebonyi NYSC Camp

A prospective Corps member lost her life en route to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Afikpo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

The deceased was among a group of 12 prospective corps members who boarded a 14-seater bus to their destination. She was part of the 2024 Batch C Stream II.

The group had boarded the bus in Enugu and was heading to the NYSC camp when the bus, operated by Enugu North Mass Transit, collided with a truck by the roadside.

The identity of the deceased, a female corps member, has not been confirmed, but she was reportedly pronounced dead at King David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS), where the others are receiving treatment.

Mr. Igwe Henry, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ebonyi, confirmed the accident. He explained that his officers had not been able to ascertain full details of the casualties as the victims were rescued before his team arrived at the scene.

“At the time our men from Amasiri Unit Command got the information and arrived at the scene, the victims had already been rescued. My officers didn’t directly carry out the rescue exercise, and therefore could not ascertain the true situation. The crash occurred on January 22nd, around 14:00 hours. The location was along the Amasiri-Okigwe route, near Amenu village in Okposi,” he stated.

The vehicles involved included a grey Toyota commercial bus and a Mercedes-Benz tipper truck. According to preliminary findings, the accident was allegedly caused by excessive speed on the part of the commercial bus.

The Sector Commander added that the items recovered from the scene were in the custody of a local resident, Chief Amos of Amenu village. He further stated that the injured victims were taken to King David’s Hospital in Uburu, where they were in stable condition.

Foluke Oladeinde, the Ebonyi State Coordinator of NYSC, visited the injured prospective corps members at the hospital. When approached by journalists, she declined to provide further comment, stating, "I am not in the right frame of mind to talk now. I am at the hospital, and yes, the accident occurred, but I can’t talk right now."
