BREAKING: Enyimba Loses to Zamalek, Crashes Out of CAF Confederation Cup
Enyimba FC's hopes of progressing in this year's CAF Confederation Cup were dashed on Sunday as they suffered a 3-1 defeat to Egyptian giants Zamalek at the Cairo International Stadium. The Nigerian side, who have previously won the prestigious CAF Champions League twice, needed a victory to have any chance of qualifying for the knockout stages.
Zamalek struck first in the 29th minute through a header by Mostafa Shalaby, followed by Seifeddine Jaziri’s goal just after the break, putting the hosts firmly in control. However, Enyimba showed signs of life when Ifeanyi Ihemekwele pulled one back in the 57th minute, sparking hopes of a comeback.
Just when it seemed that Enyimba might turn the tide, Jaziri sealed the win for Zamalek with his second goal in the 87th minute, effectively ending Enyimba’s chances of a dramatic recovery.
The loss leaves Enyimba outside the qualification spots, marking an early exit from the competition. Their hopes of continental glory are now over for this season. The team will now shift its focus back to domestic action, where they will aim to secure a record ninth Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title.
In other Group D action, Al Masry triumphed 3-1 over Black Bulls Maputo, with Fakhreddine Ben Youssef scoring a first-half hat-trick to secure their spot in the next round. Zamalek topped the group, while Al Masry clinched second place, ensuring their progression to the quarterfinals.
Enyimba’s journey in the CAF Confederation Cup may have ended, but the club will look to regroup and focus on maintaining its domestic dominance in the NPFL.
