Professor Emeka Chukwuma, a lecturer at Delta State University, Abraka, was assassinated in his hometown, Umueji, in Asaba, Delta State. The 56-year-old academic was reportedly killed on Friday night while at his residence in the St. Bridges area.

Chukwuma, who had been teaching at the university's Anwai campus before its conversion into Dennis Osadebey University, frequently visited his hometown on weekends. He was killed during one such visit, sparking alarm among residents of Asaba, who have voiced growing concerns over increasing violence, including kidnappings and killings in the area.

A source close to the incident described the situation as disturbing, lamenting the lack of safety in Asaba. "It is unfortunate that he came back yesterday for his usual weekend and was assassinated in his place," the source said.

The Delta State Police confirmed the killing, with Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, stating that investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest the perpetrators. Meanwhile, local residents are urging security agencies to take stronger action to protect lives and property amid rising insecurity in the region.
