The Managing Director of Rivers State Cassava Project Drowns While Escaping Kidnappers...
Mr. Gibson Reuben, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Rivers State Cassava Project Limited, an expatriate from the Netherlands, drowned in the Okulu River in Eleme, Rivers State, while attempting to escape from kidnappers who had ambushed his vehicle.
The incident occurred on the Eleme section of the East-West Road when a Hilux van, carrying Reuben and two company workers, was targeted by suspected kidnappers. Eyewitnesses reported that the driver lost control of the vehicle as the kidnappers attempted to stop them, causing the van to plunge into the river. Despite immediate rescue efforts, the vehicle and its occupants remained trapped in the water on Tuesday afternoon.
The Chairman of Eleme Local Government Area, Hon. Brain Gokpa, swiftly mobilized a rescue team to the scene and called for additional assistance from the Nigerian Navy and rescue agencies. Professional divers and marine police were deployed to help retrieve the van and rescue the victims.
The Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, visited the scene and commended the efforts of the rescue workers. Gokpa assured that more personnel would be mobilized to further secure the area and aid in apprehending those responsible for the ambush.
The road, known for frequent kidnappings and road accidents, has become a hotspot for criminal activity, exacerbated by its poor condition. The state Police spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed that efforts are ongoing to capture the perpetrators behind this heinous act.
