GOV PETER MBAH: A True Champion of Women's Inclusion in Governance

...WOSCONET Hails Gov Mbah for Appointing Mrs. Ngozi Silverline Egbo As Enugu State House of Assembly Clerk

A prominent women advocacy group, The Women Support Women Community Network (WOSCONET) has extended its heartfelt congratulations to Governor Barr. Peter Mbah for his historic appointment of Mrs. Ngozi Silverline Egbo as the first female Clerk of the Enugu State House of Assembly. This significant step is a major leap forward in advancing women's representation and inclusion in the political leadership of the state.

In a statement issued today by the President of WOSCONET, Amb. Mrs. Amaka Nweke JP, the group expressed its deep appreciation for Governor Mbah’s bold and visionary leadership. “Governor Peter Mbah has demonstrated his steadfast commitment to empowering women and promoting diversity in leadership. This appointment marks a pivotal moment for women in Enugu State and across the nation,” Ambassador Nweke stated.

Since taking office, Governor Mbah has been unwavering in his dedication to women’s empowerment, focusing on creating inclusive opportunities in politics, governance, and various empowerment programs. His administration has been a beacon for policies that aim to break the glass ceiling and ensure that women are not just participants but leaders in shaping the future of the state.

“The Governor’s decision to appoint a woman to such a key role is a testament to his commitment to all-inclusive governance and his determination to foster gender equality in the state’s leadership,” Amb Nweke continued. “This appointment aligns with Governor Mbah’s promises to ensure that good governance transcends gender and reaches every corner of Enugu State.”

The group further emphasized that this appointment signals the end of the era where women’s representation was limited to a token 35 percent, advocating for a system where both men and women share leadership roles equally. “We are moving beyond the 35 percent affirmative action; we envision a time when the President is a man and the Vice President is a woman, and vice versa. This is the kind of balanced governance we seek across all levels of leadership,” said Ambassador Nweke.

WOSCONET believes that women, as nation-builders and vital support systems to men, play a crucial role in fostering a balanced and harmonious society. “If we want our society to thrive, it must reflect the balance of father and mother, man and woman, in every area of governance and decision-making. Governor Mbah’s leadership style exemplifies this vision of a family-like circle of governance, where both genders contribute equally to the state’s progress,” she added.

The group highlighted the broader importance of women’s inclusion in governance, stressing the numerous benefits that come with ensuring women are actively involved in decision-making processes. Ambassador Nweke outlined the key reasons why women’s participation in leadership roles is vital for the future of the state and country:

1. Diverse Perspectives: Women bring unique experiences and insights that are often overlooked. Their inclusion ensures that policy discussions are more comprehensive, addressing the needs of all citizens, not just half the population.

2. Improved Governance: Diverse leadership tends to foster transparency, accountability, and better decision-making. Women are particularly focused on issues such as education, health, child welfare, and social justice, which directly impact communities.

3. Promotes Gender Equality: Women’s active participation in governance is a critical driver for advancing gender equality. It challenges long-standing societal norms, setting a powerful example for future generations and encouraging equal opportunities in all sectors.

4. Economic Growth: Gender equality, including the involvement of women in governance, plays a crucial role in stimulating economic development. Women’s leadership often leads to policies that improve labor force participation, reduce poverty, and enhance economic productivity.

5. Stronger Democracies: When women are represented in governance, public trust and participation in democratic processes grow. This leads to more resilient, inclusive democracies where all citizens have a voice.

6. Breaking Stereotypes and Bias: The inclusion of women in governance positions helps dismantle cultural biases and stereotypes. It demonstrates that leadership is not gender-dependent and encourages other women to aspire to roles of influence.

WOSCONET emphasized that women’s inclusion in governance is not just a matter of fairness but a practical strategy for building more sustainable, just, and thriving societies. The appointment of Mrs. Ngozi Silverline Egbo is a shining example of Governor Mbah’s commitment to a fairer and more inclusive Enugu State, one where women’s voices are integral to the development and decision-making processes that shape the future.

“With this historic step, we are optimistic that under Governor Mbah’s leadership, Enugu State will continue to set the standard for inclusive governance, where both women and men work together for the betterment of all,” Amb. Nweke concluded.
