Tragedy struck today on the Ugwu-Onyeama Enugu/Onitsha Expressway as a fuel tanker collided with several passenger vehicles, causing a devastating fire. Eyewitnesses report that private cars were engulfed in flames, with families and children reportedly burnt to ashes in the inferno.

On Saturday, January 25, 2025, a devastating fuel tanker explosion occurred at Ugwu Onyeama, Udi Local Government Area, Enugu State, claiming at least 15 lives. The explosion, which took place around 11:30 AM, caused a massive blaze that engulfed a busy expressway, shattering nearby vehicles and throwing the area into chaos.

Rescue operations are currently underway, and more details are expected shortly. Authorities are on the scene working to manage the situation.

Witnesses described the explosion as catastrophic, with the inferno spreading rapidly and making rescue efforts difficult. Some of the victims were reportedly burned beyond recognition, believed to be passengers in the vehicles caught in the fire.

As investigations are still underway, authorities have not confirmed the exact number of casualties or the cause of the explosion. The Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Transport in Enugu State, Odumegwu Chinwendu, confirmed the incident and advised travelers to avoid the area.



He urged travelers to use alternative routes, specifically the Milki Hill Side, and recommended that heavy-duty trucks park and await further instructions. Chinwendu also stressed the importance of exercising caution to ensure safety for all individuals in the area.
