HAPPENING NOW! Explosion at Mining Site Kills One, Leaves Six Others Injured In Niger State

An explosion at a mining site in Sabon Pegi, located in the Mashegun Local Government Area of Niger State, has resulted in at least one fatality and left several others injured. The explosion occurred on Sunday morning as miners resumed work at the site.

According to the police, one person was killed, while six others sustained injuries. The police suspect that dynamites may have caused the explosion.

A statement issued by the spokesperson for the state police command, Wasiu Abiodun, revealed that the explosion occurred at approximately 7:30 AM on January 26, 2025. The blast was reportedly linked to explosives that were kept in a residential area by one Yushau, who had purportedly stored them for mining activities.

The explosion led to the death of one Fatima Sadauki, while six others were injured and taken to Kainji General Hospital for medical attention.

“The incident affected about twelve houses in the area. The Commissioner of Police, Niger State Command CP Shawulu Ebenezer Danmamman, has ordered an investigation into the incident and dispatched the EOD-CBRN unit to the scene for assessment. However, the individual, Yushau, is currently at large,” the statement read.

While normalcy has been restored in the area, monitoring of the situation is ongoing.

This incident comes exactly one week after a tragic tanker explosion near Dikko Junction along Minna Road in Niger State, which claimed the lives of at least 98 people and injured many others.
