A tragic road crash on the Agaie-Lapai road in Niger State has claimed the lives of four people and left 13 others injured. The accident, which occurred on Monday near Al'Farma International School in the Agaie Local Government Area, involved three trailer trucks, one of which was transporting cattle.
According to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), the cause of the accident was identified as wrongful overtaking. Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while the remaining two succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. In addition to the human casualties, around 15 cows and more than 20 goats were also killed in the crash.
The injured passengers are receiving medical treatment at the Agaie General Hospital. Local volunteers, along with the NSEMA desk officer in Agaie, quickly mobilized for rescue operations at the crash site.
The Agaie-Lapai road, a vital transportation route frequently used by heavy-duty vehicles and livestock transporters, has been notorious for accidents. This is mainly attributed to reckless driving, poor road conditions, and violations of traffic regulations.
Recent months have seen an increase in fatal crashes along this route, leading to calls for stronger enforcement of road safety measures. Authorities such as the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and NSEMA have urged drivers to adhere strictly to traffic regulations, particularly when it comes to overtaking and vehicle overloading.
