Governor Suspends Stage Attorney General, LG Service Commission Chairman Over Allegations of Misconduct

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has suspended the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Samson Osagie, along with the Chairman of the State Local Government Service Commission, Damian Lawani, over allegations of serious misconduct and financial irregularities.

The suspension was announced by the Secretary to the State Government, Musa Ikhilor, who stated that an investigative committee will be set up to examine the allegations thoroughly. The suspension aims to facilitate a comprehensive probe into the accusations of financial misconduct.

“It is hereby announced for the information of the general public that the Gov. Monday Okpebholo has approved the suspension from office of the Chairman of Edo Local Government Service Commission, Damian Lawani, and Commissioner for Justice, Samson Osagie over allegations of grave official and financial infractions. The suspension is with immediate effect,” said Ikhilor.

The Governor has ordered the establishment of an Investigative Committee to examine the allegations leveled against the suspended officials and to make appropriate recommendations. The suspension will remain in place until the investigation concludes.

The suspension comes less than three months after Osagie and Lawani were appointed to their positions.

In addition, Okpebholo is preparing to probe the administration of former Governor Godwin Obaseki based on the findings of the Edo State Assets Verification Committee. Led by Dr. Ernest Afolabi Umakhihe, the committee’s report, submitted in Benin City, revealed allegations of financial mismanagement, improper use of government resources, possible fraud, and corruption. The report has called for a full investigation and prosecution of those involved.

The panel has also recommended that the state government review past contracts, agreements, and leases to ensure they are fair and beneficial to the people of Edo State.

However, former Governor Obaseki has dismissed the report, calling it false and an attempt to tarnish his administration’s reputation. His media aide, Crusoe Osagie, emphasized that all government transactions were properly documented and handed over to Okpebholo’s administration.
