BREAKING: NNPP Lawmakers Defect to APC Amid Party Crisis

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has suffered yet another setback as Hon. Yusuf Shittu Galambi, representing Gwaram Federal Constituency of Jigawa State, officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday, more a said to have also reportedly joined, but haven't made it official yet.

Galambi’s defection marks a significant shift in the political landscape, making him the first NNPP member in the House of Representatives to join the ruling APC. His move also adds to the growing number of opposition lawmakers—now approximately 11 in the past six months—who have switched allegiance to the ruling party.

In his statement, Hon. Galambi attributed his decision to the persistent internal crisis within the NNPP, citing:

  • Ongoing litigations and leadership struggles.
  • Factional disputes between expelled founding members and loyalists of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former Governor of Kano State.
  • Pressure from his constituents, who expressed dissatisfaction with NNPP’s leadership and urged him to move to the APC for more effective representation.

The NNPP has faced increasing instability, with key figures engaging in bitter leadership battles. The expulsion of some founding members has further deepened the crisis, leading to divisions within the party’s ranks. These challenges have weakened the party’s cohesion, prompting defections like Galambi’s.

With the APC strengthening its hold in the National Assembly, the defection of more opposition members could shift legislative dynamics in favor of the ruling party. This development also raises concerns over the future of the NNPP as it struggles to maintain unity and political relevance.

Political analysts believe that more defections could follow if the NNPP fails to resolve its leadership disputes. The party's ability to regain stability in the coming months will be crucial ahead of future elections.
