BREAKING: Popular Blogger Jailed By Police, Collapses In Custody, Hospitalized at National Hospital
Destiny Ekhorutomwen, a TikToker arrested by the Nigerian police for alleged cyberbullying and cyberstalking, has collapsed in custody and was rushed to the National Hospital in Abuja. Ekhorutomwen, 38, was arrested on January 8, 2025, in Benin City and transferred to Abuja, where his bail conditions were deemed unreasonable by many, including legal professionals.
The police demanded that Ekhorutomwen provide four sureties with assets valued at N2 billion for his administrative bail, a requirement widely considered excessive. Ekhorutomwen's arrest was reportedly orchestrated by the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, and was based on accusations of spreading false and inciting content aimed at damaging the police's reputation.
On January 30, Ekhorutomwen collapsed in custody, and his condition worsened, leading to his hospitalization. Medical reports revealed that Ekhorutomwen had a history of serious health conditions, including abdominal issues and right-sided hydronephrosis, which required ongoing treatment prior to his arrest.
The arrest has sparked condemnation from activists and public figures, including Omoyele Sowore, who criticized the police for suppressing free speech and using draconian methods to silence social media influencers.
This case has raised concerns about police impunity and the treatment of detainees in Nigeria.
