BREAKING: PSC Clarifies Status of IGP Kayode Egbetokun After Retirement Order for Senior Officers

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has addressed concerns regarding the status of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun following a recent directive mandating the retirement of police officers aged 60 or older, or those who have served for over 35 years.

The PSC clarified that this retirement directive, issued on January 31, 2025, does not apply to IGP Egbetokun. Although he turned 60 last year, the PSC emphasized that the IGP is a presidential appointee, not under its jurisdiction. The commission’s powers, as outlined in the Constitution, do not extend to the appointment or tenure of the IGP, which is solely the prerogative of the President, advised by the Police Council.

The PSC also confirmed that its recent decision concerning the retirement of senior police officers only applied to lower ranks and had no bearing on the IGP’s position. The commission reaffirmed its working relationship with the IGP and its role in overseeing other aspects of the police force, excluding the IGP's appointment.
