BREAKING: Reps Committee Proposes Creation Of 31 New States
The House of Representatives Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution has announced the receipt of 31 proposals for the creation of new states across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones.
The proposals, which include suggestions for states like Okun, Okura, and Confluence from Kogi, Benue Ala and Apa from Benue, FCT State, and many others, were discussed by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu during a plenary session.
The committee's letter outlined the conditions for state creation, emphasizing that a request for creating a new state must be supported by at least a third of members in the National Assembly and the relevant State House of Assembly.
The new states being considered also include regions from Kaduna, Kano, Taraba, Rivers, and other states across the country.
The committee has urged all proposals to strictly adhere to Section 8 of the 1999 Constitution regarding state creation, and additional steps, including a referendum, will follow to meet the constitutional guidelines.
