CORRUPTION: Nigeria's Former Presidential Candidate Narrates How He Rejected N5bn Fraudulent Government Deal
Former presidential candidate of the defunct Alliance for New Nigeria and leadership coach, Fela Durotoye, has recounted how he turned down a N5bn fraudulent government deal despite pressure from a government official.
While speaking at the ongoing biannual conference of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria in Abuja on February 11, 2025, Durotoye shared his experience. He explained how an official, who claimed to be a pastor, approached him with a lucrative training contract. The official told him he had been selected to train people in all 774 local government areas of Nigeria.
Durotoye stated that upon request, he prepared an invoice, and his team calculated a fair price of N1.3 billion for the training.
Three days later, Durotoye received a call from the presidency congratulating him on securing the job, but with a twist. They informed him that his requested amount was too small and promised to add N700 million to make it N2 billion. They then asked him to submit an invoice for N5 billion.
Durotoye questioned the ethics of inflating the price, particularly for a training centered on ethical leadership, but the official dismissed his concerns. The man assured him that the deal was legitimate, stating that he had served the country and deserved compensation. Durotoye countered by reminding him that the blessings of God make one rich without sorrow, but the official insisted that there was no sorrow in the deal, asserting, "You have been doing well for Nigeria. It is time for Nigeria to do well for you."
During their conversation, Durotoye turned off his phone because the official was insistent on inflating the price. Three months later, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested some officials from the presidency for allegedly stealing N426 million from an ethical leadership training fund.
This revelation highlights the ethical stand taken by Durotoye in the face of corruption.
