DANGER! Nigeria’s Security at Risk As Senate Probes Disappearance of 178,459 Police Weapons
The Nigerian Senate has expressed concern over the whereabouts of at least 4,000 firearms, revealed during an investigative hearing by the Public Accounts Committee.
An audit report from the office of the Auditor General of the Federation highlighted discrepancies in the police armory records between 2000 and 2020. The Auditor General informed the lawmakers that in 2018, the report raised questions regarding the disappearance of about 178,459 different types of arms and ammunition from the police armory, with no trace of their whereabouts. Additionally, 3,907 assorted rifles and pistols went missing from various police formations across the country as of January 2020.
The lawmakers criticized the police for failing to track the missing weapons and bring those responsible to justice. Concerns were raised that these firearms may have ended up in the wrong hands, exacerbating the nation's ongoing security challenges.
Senator Adams Oshiomhole shared a personal experience related to the assassination of his aide, highlighting the real-life consequences of missing firearms.
In response, the Police stated that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) regularly conducts audits of firearms and assured that the force is committed to ensuring no weapons go missing. However, lawmakers insisted on a clear and public explanation for the missing firearms, particularly in light of recent security concerns. Senators pointed to previous reports of security personnel selling arms to criminals, emphasizing that transparency is essential.
