Deceased’s Body Returned to Mortuary After Family’s Violent Clash at Funeral
A violent clash broke out among family members during the funeral of 78-year-old Emmanuel Agbozo, popularly known as “Nil oo Nii,” in Nkurakan, Yilo Krobo Municipality, Eastern Region, Ghana, on Saturday morning. The altercation led to the deceased’s body being returned to the mortuary instead of being buried as planned.
The confrontation arose after one of the deceased’s children attempted to attend the funeral. Family members accused this individual of abandoning his father during his illness and failing to visit him before his passing. Furthermore, prior to his death, Emmanuel Agbozo had made it clear to his family that he did not want this child to participate in his funeral rites.
In an attempt to enforce the deceased's final wishes, the family prevented the son from attending, leading to a violent clash. The son, accompanied by several young men, attempted to confront the family members, resulting in destruction of property and injuries. The situation quickly escalated, and the police were called in to restore order.
In the interest of peace and to prevent further violence, the police intervened, escorting the deceased’s body back to a private mortuary in Huhunya, a nearby community. The funeral was indefinitely suspended as a result of the violent disruption.
The police have since initiated an investigation into the incident, and those involved in the clash are currently assisting with the inquiries. The authorities are working to resolve the situation and ensure that justice is served.
