Embattled Obasa Heads To Court Over Removal as Lagos Speaker
The former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has filed a lawsuit against the Assembly and the new Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, at the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja. He is challenging the legality of his removal.
In the suit, Obasa argues that his colleagues acted unlawfully by removing him while the Assembly was on recess. The application, dated February 12, 2025, was filed by his lawyer, Chief Afolabi Fashanu (SAN). It claims Obasa was removed from his position on January 13, 2025, by 36 lawmakers while he was out of the country.
Obasa is seeking several reliefs, including an expedited hearing of the case and limiting the time for the defendants to respond. He contends that the proceedings of the Lagos State House of Assembly during recess violated constitutional rules, especially since the Speaker did not convene the Assembly or delegate authority.
The former Speaker also maintains that public interest requires that this case be resolved quickly to avoid disruption of legislative activities in the state. Obasa insists that the court must urgently address the legality of the Assembly’s current leadership, which he believes violates the applicable laws.
The case is still awaiting a hearing date. Obasa was impeached by the House on January 13 while he was abroad. His Deputy, Mojisola Meranda, was immediately elected as the new Speaker, becoming the first female to lead the legislative body in the South-West state.
Upon his return on January 25, Obasa held a rally at his residence in Ikeja, asserting that he was not afraid of being impeached but emphasized that due process was not followed. He accused the state’s Commissioner of Police of being involved in the process, alleging that security agents, led by the Commissioner, invaded the Assembly complex and his homes in Agege and Ikeja, locking his family indoors with over 200 officers present. He dismissed allegations of misconduct and misappropriation.
