Enugu South Council boss pays WAEC, JAMB fees for 300 students
The Chairman, Enugu South Council Area, Mr Caleb Ani, has cleared the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) registration fees of over 300 students.
The beneficiaries cut across public, mission and private schools in the 13 political wards in the council.
Speaking during the distribution of cheques to the benefiting candidates at the council's headquarters, on Saturday, Ani said the gesture was a fulfilment of his campaign promises to empower the people through education.
He said: "This is one of the campaign promises we made to the citizens of Enugu South Council Area that we are going to pick interest in their affair as it concerns education.
"The payment is not just for the indigenes, but non indigenes because our governor is somebody that believes in equality and fairness and that is what we are doing here in Enugu South".
The chairman added the gesture was to complement the effort of Gov. Peter Mbah, who had revolutionised the education sector.
He advised parents and guardians to see education as the only investment that they should give to their children.
Ani reassured the people of his commitment to fulfilling his campaign promises, noting that he was investing in education as a "educated society is a huge enabler in economic development".
Earlier, the Education Secretary of the council, Mrs Constance Ogbodo-Okorie, commended the chairman for his efforts at improving the standard of education in the area.
In his address, Chidiebere Edeh John,
House Committee Chairman on Education, lauded the council chairman for following the foot steps of Mbah in education, vowing that the assembly would give him all the necessary legislative backing to ensure he succeeds.
He called on the political class and other stakeholders to join hands with the chairman towards providing an enabling environment for teaching and learning.
In their reaction, two beneficiaries, Kamsi Uchime and Fidelis Anosike, expressed gratitude to the chairman for the gesture, promising to study hard.
The ceremony was attended by stakeholders, including the Deputy Chairman, Enugu South Council Area, Mr Anthony Egbo, Ozo Emma Ugwu, State Organising Secretary, Ọhanaeze Ndigbo, Enugu State Chapter among others.
