JUSTICE FOR MEN: Police Arraign Woman for Refusing to Marry a Man After Collecting N607,500 in Ekiti
The Ekiti State Police Command arraigned a 31-year-old woman, Ajayi Esther, before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate's Court for allegedly refusing to marry a man after collecting N607,500 from him.
The defendant, who has no fixed address, faces charges of fraud, impersonation, and breach of peace.
According to the police prosecutor, Inspector Sodiq Adeniyi, the incident occurred on February 1 at about 10:00 a.m. in Ado-Ekiti. Adeniyi stated that the defendant, a married woman, met the complainant, Mr. Ajayi Oluwabusuyi, and falsely claimed to be single. She then convinced him that they would marry, collecting N607,500 from him to prepare for their engagement ceremony, which she failed to follow through on.
Adeniyi further alleged that the defendant falsely presented herself as a teacher at Egiri Oke Comprehensive School in Iyin Ekiti, Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area. He added that her actions had the potential to cause a breach of peace.
The prosecutor noted that the offences contravened Sections 186, 393, and 181(1)(d) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.
The prosecutor requested an adjournment to allow time to study the case file and gather witnesses. The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Defense counsel, Mrs. Joy Raphael, requested bail for the defendant, assuring the court that she would not abscond. The Chief Magistrate, Dolamu Babalogbon, granted bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.
The case was adjourned until March 5 for further hearing.
