Kano Mass Wedding to Gulp N2.5bn – Commissioner

The Kano State government has allocated a sum of N2.5 billion for the organization of mass weddings across the state. This was revealed by the state’s Commissioner for Planning and Budget, Musa Sulaiman Shanono, during a briefing on the 2025 fiscal year budget.

Shanono explained that the amount will be used for quarterly mass weddings in the 44 local government areas (LGAs) of Kano State. This initiative, which was first introduced by former Governor Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso’s administration, continues under the current government led by Governor Abba Yusuf. In 2023, the NNPP-led government conducted a mass wedding for over 1,800 couples, costing about N854 million.

Furthermore, the commissioner noted that a significant portion of the state’s 2025 budget, totaling N719.7 billion, is directed towards education, with N205.9 billion allocated to the education sector alone. This budget includes N6.2 billion for free education and school feeding programs in the state.

The approved budget for 2025 marks a 31% increase over the original budget submission, with a focus on human capital and economic development. The total recurrent expenditure is N262.6 billion, and capital expenditure stands at N457 billion.

In addition to mass weddings, the 2025 budget also earmarks N500 million for free afternoon meals for primary school children, and it allocates funds for various other sector-related programs, including infrastructure.
