Labour Threatens Nationwide Shutdown Over Sack of 900 Employees by Kaduna DISCO
The ongoing industrial unrest at Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KADECO) continues, as the company has sacked 900 employees. The situation, now in its third day, has severely affected the company's operations, with no resolution in sight.
The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has given KADECO a deadline of February 10, 2025, to recall the workers and address other issues, or the dispute will be escalated to a national level.
NUEE's Acting General Secretary, Dominic Igwebike, stated that the mass sack of workers, without adhering to the company’s conditions of service, is a violation of the Nigerian Labour Act and the International Labour Organization’s Convention No. 98. He also criticized the company for neglecting its workers in various areas, including healthcare, pension remittances, promotions, and payment of benefits to deceased staff's families.
The union outlined a series of grievances, including non-payment of death benefits, non-implementation of the National Minimum Wage, and non-provision of essential working materials.
NUEE has demanded that KADECO reverse the sackings and return to negotiations with the union. If these demands are not met by the February 10 deadline, the union has vowed to escalate its protests across all electricity companies in the country. The union has warned that the Kaduna DISCO management will be held responsible for any disruptions to the already fragile electricity sector.
