Police Brutality: A Tale of Tragedy and Injustice in Obollo-Afor
Enugu youths are rallying for justice following the tragic death of Mr. Nnaemeka Ugwu, a law-abiding citizen from Umuezejor, Obollo-Afor, who died after being allegedly subjected to brutal treatment by a police officer from the Nsukka Area Command. The incident, which occurred on February 6, 2025, has ignited widespread reaction, with local activists calling for a full investigation and accountability for the officers involved in the alleged fatal abuse of power.
In a statement signed by various youth leaders, Obollo-Afor Youth Advocacy Executives (OYA), narrated the incident;
"Police Brutality: A Tale of Tragedy and Injustice in Obollo-Afor
We express our outrage over the brutal force and inhuman treatment inflicted upon Mr. Nnaemeka Ugwu from Umuezejor, Obollo-Afor, by a cruel police officer attached to the Nsukka Area Command, which led to his death. The disturbing incident occurred on February 6, 2025, sending shockwaves through Obollo-Afor. It also serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of police brutality and the urgent need for police reform.
On February 6, Mr. Nnaemeka Ugwu and several others were harassed and arrested by a police officer who accused a patent medicine store owner of selling illicit drugs. This accusation followed the police officer (Inspector Dumiri) and his team storming their business premises located on New Makurdi Road, Obollo-Afor. The victim, known to his family and friends as a law-abiding citizen, was taken into custody and never returned home. Tragically, he developed complications while in detention due to injuries sustained from the excessive force used during interrogation, which ultimately caused him to collapse. He was immediately rushed to Shanahan Hospital, where he was confirmed dead, sparking widespread outrage and calls for justice.
The circumstances surrounding the victim's death are deeply troubling. Eyewitness testimony from Mr. Onyekachi Thaddeus, whose wife was also arrested alongside the deceased and four other people, reported that the police officer used excessive force during the arrest and interrogation, resulting in physical injuries to the victim in an attempt to coerce him into writing a false statement. The fact that the victims were accused of a crime without evidence and that one of them died under suspicious circumstances raises serious questions about police misconduct and impunity within the Nsukka Area Command.
This incident is not isolated. It is part of a larger pattern of police brutality and abuse of power that has claimed countless lives and shattered families. It serves as a stark reminder that the community is not safe from those who are sworn to protect and serve them.
We demand justice for the victim and his family. We demand that the police officer alleged to be responsible for his death be held accountable and brought to justice. We demand that the police department take immediate action to address the systemic issues that led to this tragedy and launch a proper, unbiased investigation.
We will not be silenced. We will not be intimidated. We will continue to speak out against police brutality and demand justice for all victims of police abuse, working tirelessly to create a society where everyone can live without fear of harassment, arrest, or extrajudicial killings."
