SAD: Vigilantes Drag 71-Year-Old Widow Through Community, Chain Her to Market Square Pole

Public outrage erupted after a disturbing video went viral showing a 71-year-old widow, Madam Sudinah Andrew, chained to a pole at the Market Square in Korokorosei Community, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, Bayelsa State. The incident took place on January 28, 2025, and was reportedly carried out by a local vigilante group.

The widow was accused of wielding a cutlass against her daughter during a family dispute. However, investigations revealed that the allegations were false, as Madam Andrew was simply preparing to cut plantains and was trying to caution her daughter. Despite this, members of the vigilante group, led by Opukiri Ogbe and Ayibaditon Fiokorighe, dragged her through the community and chained her to a pole at the Market Square.

This act was reportedly fueled by a personal grudge against the widow, who had earlier reported members of the group to the police for alleged harassment.

Madam Andrew’s relatives filed a complaint with the police and women's rights organizations, prompting her release the following day, on January 29, 2025. After being rescued, she was taken to the emergency unit at the Government House clinic in Yenagoa for medical attention.

In an interview, Madam Andrew explained that she was only holding the cutlass for her plantain harvesting and never intended harm. She expressed the trauma and humiliation caused by the incident.

The End Violence Against Women and Children (EVAWC), a non-governmental organization, condemned the actions of the vigilante group. They called for a thorough investigation and justice for the elderly woman. Dr. Dise Ogbise Goddy Harry, the founder of the Do Foundation, also spoke out, emphasizing that such acts of vigilante justice undermine the rule of law and basic human rights.

Authorities and non-governmental organizations are now pushing for a thorough investigation into the incident to ensure justice is served.
