South Africans Call for Minister's Removal Over Chidimma Adeshina's Return
South African citizens have sparked an outcry, calling for the dismissal of the Minister of Home Affairs, Leon Schreiber, after Nigerian beauty queen Chidimma Adeshina, the Miss Universe First Runner-Up 2024, was spotted in Cape Town. The sighting, which was shared in a viral video circulating on X, shows Adeshina at a café in the Waterfront area, fueling questions about how she managed to re-enter the country despite earlier legal complications.
In October 2024, the South African Department of Home Affairs had announced that it was investigating Adeshina's mother for identity fraud and document theft. Following this investigation, the department revoked Adeshina and her mother’s IDs and travel documents after they failed to comply with an order to provide explanations. As a result, Adeshina withdrew from the Miss South Africa competition amidst a wave of backlash and accusations regarding her South African citizenship.
Adeshina, whose father is Nigerian and mother Mozambican, had become a target of xenophobic attacks due to her mixed heritage. The accusations surrounding her mother escalated into a national controversy, ultimately leading to Adeshina’s exit from the Miss South Africa competition. However, she later went on to win the Miss Nigeria 2024 title.
The resurfacing of Adeshina in South Africa has reignited debate over her citizenship status, and many South Africans are questioning how she was able to enter the country despite previous controversies.
