TODAY: Over 100 Suspected Illegal Miners Arrested in Jos

The Plateau Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Mineral Development has confirmed the arrest of 100 suspected illegal miners in Jos. Yabilsu Dogo, the permanent secretary of the ministry, announced this development on Thursday, highlighting the ongoing collaboration with the police to combat illegal mining activities in the region.

Illegal mining has been identified as a significant threat to both human settlements and the environment, with the dangerous practice leading to land degradation. The indiscriminate digging of pits and tunnels by miners is weakening the soil structure, making areas prone to sinkholes and unstable for infrastructure like buildings and roads. Additionally, last year saw incidents of building collapses in Jos, which Mr. Dogo attributed to the compromising effect of illegal mining on the integrity of structures.

Beyond the environmental impact, illegal mining has also resulted in loss of government revenue, as unregulated mineral extraction deprives the state of funds for development. As part of efforts to tackle these challenges, the Plateau government has reinforced enforcement measures and is working to raise awareness about the dangers of illegal mining. Additionally, plans are being put in place to provide alternative livelihoods for illegal miners.
