Trouble Looms in Anambra as Group Agitates, Following the Sealing of Shrine by Soludo Govt Over Okite

A fresh wave of controversy has emerged in Anambra State following the recent sealing of a shrine in Okija by the state government, with a group of Anambra indigenes residing abroad expressing their opposition to the government’s actions. The group, known as Anambra State in Diaspora, has issued a stern warning against what they describe as an infringement on the fundamental human rights of Anambra people.

The sealing of the shrine, which was allegedly operated by Ekene Igboegbueze, a self-proclaimed native doctor, has sparked widespread debate. While the state government, led by Governor Charles Soludo, justified the move as part of efforts to curb illegal activities and fake spiritual practices, the Anambra State in Diaspora group believes that it is an attack on their cultural heritage.

In a statement released today, the group argued that the government’s actions violated the right of individuals to worship their traditional deities, a practice deeply rooted in the culture of the Igbo people. They expressed concerns that the government's crackdown could lead to further persecution of those involved in traditional religious practices.

“The Soludo government’s actions represent a direct assault on the traditional spiritual practices of the Igbo people. We have the right to worship our traditional gods, and this is enshrined in our culture and heritage. The government must respect the diversity of beliefs in the state,” said a spokesperson for the group.

The controversy is intensifying as the group calls for the immediate reversal of the shrine’s closure, demanding that the government engage in dialogue with traditional spiritual leaders to address the concerns without resorting to coercion or cultural suppression.

Governor Soludo’s administration, which has been focused on reforming various sectors of the state, has yet to respond to the growing discontent. However, the issue has gained traction among Anambra residents both at home and abroad, with some warning that continued government interference in religious practices could lead to further unrest in the state.

The situation remains tense, and it is unclear whether this dispute will escalate into a larger movement advocating for the protection of traditional religious rights in the region.
