The directive, announced in a statewide broadcast on Sunday, March 2, 2025, follows the Supreme Court’s ruling that nullified their elections and barred the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) from releasing local government allocations to the state. Ogunbode Kodri Adedamola Olasunkami went missing on January 16. His girlfriend reported that he had called her to say he was going to church. When he didn’t return, his girlfriend insisted that he had gone to church as planned. The police investigated and arrested the pastor of the church, Prophet Whepetoji Babaniyah. Initially, the pastor denied any knowledge of Ogunbode’s whereabouts and claimed he hadn’t been to church that day. However, further investigation revealed a transfer of 1.5 million naira from Ogunbode’s account to the pastor’s account on the same day. Another transfer was made to the pastor’s son’s account. Fraudsters have stolen N329m by using static images to register for Bank Verification Numbers. This is according to a new report by the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System, which outlines emerging fraud trends in Nigeria’s financial sector. According to the report obtained by Sunday PUNCH, some unscrupulous BVN enrollment agents facilitated the scheme by registering still images of individuals, both Nigerians and foreigners, as live enrollees. The BVNs were then used to open fraudulent accounts across microfinance banks, mobile money operators, and payment service banks. The fraudulent scheme enabled transactions involving the N329m just days after the BVNs were generated and the fake accounts were created. Investigations showed that some of the BVNs created using static images were assigned Nigerian names, which made it difficult to detect their fraudulent nature during the enrolment process.
