International Women’s Day: Enugu East LGA In Focus

The 2025 International Women’s Day celebration in Enugu State was a grand spectacle, bringing together women from across the state to reflect on progress, highlight challenges, and reaffirm the commitment to gender equality. Organized by the Wife of the Governor, Her Excellency, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, the event, held at Michael Okpara Square, showcased the resilience, contributions, and cultural heritage of Enugu women.

In her address, Mrs. Mbah, represented by the Wife of the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Mrs. Chinyere Ugwu, pledged to sustain policies and programs that uplift women, girls, and other vulnerable groups. She emphasized that since the inception of Governor Peter Mbah’s administration, strategic policies have been implemented to enhance the welfare of women and children, particularly through education, vocational training, and social support.

"Women play a pivotal role in the socio-economic development of our society. Providing them with the necessary incentives to thrive is not just a moral obligation but a societal necessity. Through the Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, the state has rescued victims of domestic violence, provided support for vulnerable groups, and removed barriers hindering their progress," she stated.

Mrs. Mbah further noted that the celebration was an opportunity to recognize women's achievements across various sectors, including politics, business, healthcare, and technology. She called for continued action against gender-based discrimination, violence, and economic exclusion, reaffirming the government’s commitment to fostering an inclusive society where no woman or girl is marginalized.

Echoing this sentiment, the State Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Mrs. Ngozi Eni, underscored the significant strides made by Governor Peter Mbah’s administration in empowering women. She encouraged women to take full advantage of available opportunities and contribute to the development of Enugu State.

CULTURAL EXTRAVAGANZA: NKANU EAST STEALS THE SHOW

A major highlight of the event was the cultural showcase by the 17 Local Government Areas, each exhibiting their unique heritage through traditional attire, music, dance, delicacies, and indigenous crafts. Among them, Nkanu East Local Government Area, led by Mrs. Rita Edeh, emerged as the standout performer, captivating the audience with their vibrant traditional dance, expertly prepared delicacies such as Okpa, Abacha, and Ofe Akwu, and a rich storytelling session that honored the wisdom of their ancestors.

Addressing the gathering, Mrs. Rita Edeh, the Executive Chairman of Nkanu East LGA and Chairman of ALGON, emphasized the vital role of culture in shaping societal values and identity.

"Culture is the heartbeat of a people. It binds us together and reminds us of our roots. Women, as custodians of tradition, play an indispensable role in preserving our heritage. As we advocate for gender equality and greater opportunities for women, let us also ensure that our cultural legacy remains vibrant and strong," she stated.

She commended the Wife of the Governor for her unwavering support for women’s empowerment and urged women to embrace their identity while striving for excellence in all spheres of life.

The electrifying performances by Nkanu East earned standing ovations from dignitaries, who praised the LGA for their outstanding representation of Enugu’s cultural richness. The event also featured a march-past, educational talks on gender-based violence and nutrition, distribution of food items to support families, and the presentation of awards to distinguished women, including Mrs. Chinyere Ugwu, Mrs. Rita Edeh, Dr. Ifeyinwa Ani-Osheku, and Adenike Okebu.

As the event concluded, the resounding message was clear: the future of women in Enugu State is bright, but sustained action is needed to accelerate progress. With a strong commitment to gender equality, empowerment, and cultural preservation, Enugu continues to set the pace in championing the rights and advancement of women and girls.
